Today I am sharing a stamp from Germany. It has appeared on my blog before but I'd like to share it again.
A stamp from Germany, showing the solar spectrum (the rainbow) and the dark absorption lines. These were studied by Joseph von Fraunhofer (6 March 1787 – 7 June 1826).
According to Wikipedia, "In physics and optics, the Fraunhofer lines are a set of spectral lines named for the German physicist Joseph von Fraunhofer (1787–1826). The lines were originally observed as dark features (absorption lines) in the optical spectrum of the Sun. ... About 45 years later Kirchhoff and Bunsen noticed that several Fraunhofer lines coincide with characteristic emission lines identified in the spectra of heated elements. It was correctly deduced that dark lines in the solar spectrum are caused by absorption by chemical elements in the Solar atmosphere."
Essentially, when there is a ball of hot gas (the Sun) giving off light, and then an area with cool (relatively) gases (hydrogen, oxygen, etc.) the cool gases absorb certain wavelengths of light. This happens in the outer atmosphere in the Sun. Lab experiments can help identify these elements. For example, the thicker line in the red is associated with hydrogen, and the two lines very close together in the yellow are associated with sodium.
So we can conclude: these elements seen on earth are also in the Sun, and when these lines are seen in the spectra of other stars, we know these elements exist in other stars.

Sunday Stamps "E"
Hello and welcome to my infrequent postings to this blog. My day job started up in late August, and this weekend I am fighting a cold. No fun. :-(
However I do want to participate in Sunday Stamps, up to the letter E in the tour of the alphabet. I found this stamp in my work desk, while looking for something else:
A stamp issued in 2008 celebrating the work of Charles and Ray Eames, a husband and wife design partnership.
According to Wikipedia:
Charles Ormond Eames, Jr. /ˈiːmz/ (1907–1978) and Bernice Alexandra "Ray" Kaiser Eames (1912–1988) were an American design married couple who made significant historical contributions to the development of modern architecture and furniture. Among their most well-known designs is the Eames Lounge Chair. They also worked in the fields of industrial and graphic design, fine art, and film. Ray Kaiser Eames and Charles Eames worked together as creative partners.

Sunday Stamps "A"
Good day, and welcome to my blog. This is post #500 on Viridian's Postcard Blog!!!
I am joining SeeitonaPostcard for Sunday Stamps. We are on round three of the alphabet, starting with the letter A. I have an older stamp from Finland:
The beautiful Aurora Borealis. I have seen pale versions of the aurora, but not the colorful and bright lights that one sees at far northern latitudes.

Sepia Saturday July 28
I was cruising by Sepia Saturday today and saw this week's prompt, and thought, I bet I could find something related at the Library of Congress website. The website has been reorganized, but I cam across this image:
Part of the illustration for a book, "The settler's guide in the United States and British North American provinces" etc. etc. (There is much more to the title as was done in the 1800's.)
I cannot make out the name of the ship, just that it is 600 feet long. And one can see it is from that transitional time period from sail to steam.

Sunday Stamps "U"
Good day!
I am joining in with Sunday Stamps at SeeitonaPostcard after about a month away.
We are up to the letter "U".
A stamp from Ukraine, showing the national flag. And note the sender has included the surrounding material from the stamp sheet, so that you get a real sense of the flag waving in the breeze.
Please visit Seeitonapostcard this week and see who else is joining in!

Sunday Stamps II "P"
Good day and welcome to my postcard and stamp blog. Today I am participating in Sunday Stamps, hosted at SeeitonaPostcard.
This stamp I received via Postcrossing some time ago - a stamp from Poland. Pretty flowers!

Sepia Saturday May 20
OK, I am a little late, but I saw the prompt for this week's Sepia Saturday and had to join in.
Rocks! Overhanging rocks!
On the front: " The mysterious hanging boulder mystifies all who pass under. Polar Caves, N.H."
On the back: "Polar Caves, N.H., America's greatest Boulder Caverns. A maze of caves and spectacular rock formations. All caverns colorfully lighted. Different from and [sic] caverns you may have seen. Nothing like it on the American continent."
I love older tourist postcards like this.
Polar caves in Rumney NH is still there and still an active tourist location. Its website is, of course, http://www.polarcaves.com/. I think the hanging boulder is still there.

Sunday Stamps II "N"
Welcome Sunday Stamps readers and contributors. I have been busy with my other blog and have shamefully neglected this one. But I am back with a stamp for the letter N.
This is a stamp issued last year to celebrate the statehood of Nebraska. The photo shows sandhill cranes rising from the Platte River. Part of their migration takes them over Nebraska and their gathering here is a sight to see.
The area of this state (and nearby states) became part of the USA as part of the Louisiana Purchase.

Sunday Stamps April 8
Welcome to my blog on postcards and stamps.
Today I am contributing to Sunday Stamps, which is up to the letter H in the tour of the alphabet. Violet Sky has shared a stamp for the letter H, hockey.
I have a stamp from Hong Kong.
Our scanner is not working so I took a cell phone photo. I think this winter/holiday stamp has been shred before, but no matter, still cute!

Sunday Stamps II Feb. 25
Welcome to my blog on postcards and stamps.
Today I am contributing to Sunday Stamps, which is up to the letter B in the tour of the alphabet. Violet Sky has shared a badger (barsuk) on a stamp for Belarus. I have also found an animal stamp from Belarus:
This is the southern white-breasted hedgehog (Erinaceus concolor), sometimes referred to as east European hedgehog, white-bellied hedgehog or white-chested hedgehog, according to Wikipedia. It does not appear to be threatened. A cute little animal, at least on this stamp!!!

Sunday Stamps II 165
Good day, and welcome to Sunday on my blog. It is the week of Mardi Gras, but it is also the Lunar New Year or Chinese New Year.
I am joining Sunday Stamps with this year's US contribution:
There is a gold embossed dog in the upper left hand corner, but yes, it's hard to tell that this stamp celebrates the Year of the Dog. Pictured here are some bamboo stems, it seems.

Sunday Stamps II 162
Welcome to my contribution to Sunday Stamps, in the cool and drizzly American Midwest.
SeeitonaPostcard is up to the letter X. I remember gathering images from the internet of words pertaining to the alphabet, for a project my daughter was doing in first grade (some years ago now!) Tiring of X-rays and the xylophone, I printed out a picture of a Xebec:
A type of boat used in the Mediterranean. "But momma, that is a boat!" claimed my daughter, and off we went to find a picture of a xylophone.
I don't have this stamp in hand - I went off on the internet myself to find this image of a Maltese stamp.

Sunday Stamps II 160
Happy New Year everyone!!!
It's time for Sunday Stamps, and SeeitonaPostcard is up to the letter V. Growing up in New England, I immediately thought of the state of Vermont.
A state stamp is still available in the collector's area of the US Postal Service website, paired with the state quarter:
The design of the stamp looks like a vintage tourist postcard. (It's a little strange to see the Fall colors of the Vermont mountains up against the snow that Vermont is famous for.)
