Sunday Stamps: the letter "F"

Good day, welcome to my blog.  It's a cool Fall-like day and cloudy, in the American Midwest.  Well it is September.

We are up to the Letter F in the tour of the alphabet by Sunday Stamps.  I have two stamps today.  Firstly, a stamp from Finland:

A cute teddy bear writing away.  And a stamp from France:

This is a self-portrait by Albrecht Durer.  This is an engraving after the original portrait, which is below (from Durer's Wikipedia page):

Sunday Stamps: Cities/Urban

Good day, and welcome to my postcard and stamp blog.  It is a cool May day in the American Midwest, and it's time for Sunday stamps.

The theme this week is Cities or urban scenes.  I have a stamp of Paris:

That was a joint issue with China.  This stamp was issued some time ago.  I also have an urban scene:

A streetcar and some nice birch trees from Finland.  When I was in Postcrossing I received many postcards from Finland.

Be sure to visit SeeitonaPostcard for more entries.

Sunday Stamps: Night time

Welcome to the last day of the year. It is another cloudy gloomy day in the American Midwest, but no matter, it is time for Sunday Stamps.

The theme this week is Night Scenes.  Here is a stamp from Finland, showing a natural phenomena that can only be seen at night:

The Aurora Borealis.  I have shared this stamp before, but it's nice to see it again.  I have seen only pale versions of the aurora at my latitude, and that rarely.

Sunday Stamps: Landscapes

Good day, and welcome to my blog.  It is a warm late summer morning in the Midwest USA.

It's Sunday, and time for Sunday Stamps.

I know the US Postal Service has some newish landscape stamps - the theme for today - but their website is down right now.  So I will share a stamp I have shared before, early in my days of hosting:

A stamp of a National Park in Southern Finland, looking serene with the trees and lake.  This came on a Postcrossing stamp, back when I was doing Postcrossing.

Sunday Stamps: Snow/Winter

It's the doldrums of August and summer is definitely here.  There is a predicted high of 88 F or 31 C today in my part of the American Midwest.  If it cools down at night people can handle this but in many places it is just not as cool overnight as it once was.

Our hostess has asked us to share snow or winter scenes to cool us down, and has shared some wonderful stamps.  My snow stamp is below:

Stylized snow on the rooftops.  That is getting rarer in my part of the USA.

Sunday Stamps: Transportation

Good day and welcome to my contribution to Sunday Stamps.  It is a warm, pre-Spring day in the American Midwest.  I suspect we are all still thinking of Ukraine.  I wish I had a Ukraine stamp that follows today's theme, transportation.  Instead I will show you one from Finland:

Public transport - a streetcar.  And some nice birch trees.

Sunday Stamps "A"

Good day, and welcome to my blog.  This is post #500 on Viridian's Postcard Blog!!!

I am joining SeeitonaPostcard for Sunday Stamps.  We are on round three of the alphabet, starting with the letter A.  I have an older stamp from Finland:

The beautiful Aurora Borealis.  I have seen pale versions of the aurora, but not the colorful and bright lights that one sees at far northern latitudes.

Sunday Stamps II - 59

All it well at chez Viridian, just busy and forgetful about my blog.
I am joining in again with Sunday Stamps, run by Violet Sky at SeeitonaPostcard.

The theme this week is Winter Scenes.

One of my favorite stamps, featured on my blog some years ago.  I feel it is very evocative of deep winter.

Please see who else is joining in at See it on a Postcard!

Sunday Stamps # 179

It is a beautiful Saturday evening in the American Midwest, and already Sunday in some parts of the world.  Therefore, it must be time for Sunday Stamps.

Our theme this week is beautiful landscapes, which are not hard to find on stamps, if you look around a bit.
My first stamp is this one:

A flat, evergreen-covered landscape could be very boring but it looks quite attractive in this Finland stamp of a National Park.  And, then just last week, I received these stamps from  Spain, via a Postcrosser:

Stamps again showing National Parks, and some of the flora (crocus?) and fauna (wolf) of these areas.  There is great detail in these Spanish stamps!

Please join me this week if you can, with some landscape stamps, as always, interpreted broadly.

Theme next week; Artists and illustrators.
Theme week after that: open, anything you wish.

Sunday Stamps # 162

Good evening everyone, on a warmer day, where it did NOT snow!  The tips of my daffodils are showing above the mulch, but otherwise there is no green anywhere.  We will have to bide our time for Spring.

For Sunday Stamps, our theme is Letters, postcards, and the post.  I know this is a favorite of many contributors.  I have several stamps to share.  First, a sweet bear writing a letter, from Finland:

This, I believe is part of a series, and someone showed another stamp from this series a few weeks ago - I am sorry I do not remember whom.  Next up:

(sorry for the askew scan!) A beautiful landscape from Japan, but then I noticed it was from International Letter Writing Week in 2013!  A bonus.  Lastly, from the Netherlands:

It's hard to tell, but I think the little figure in this stamp is rushing to get his/her letter posted.

What do you have this week?  Perhaps a red letter box?  A stamp about stamps?  Please share.

Theme next week:  farms and farm animals.
Theme two weeks from now: buses and public transportation.

Sunday Stamps # 153

Hello again Sunday Stamp contributors! We keep rolling along week after week, keeping a routine to my (and your) Saturday Night and Sunday morning.  We have a new all-in-one scanner/printer at chez Viridian so that slowed me down a little this evening as I learned the new procedures for scanning.  But all is now ready to go for Sunday Stamps.

Our theme this week is anything you wish.
I am still in a wintry mood and so I am scanning this stamp from Finland:

I have received at least one other in this series - sweet vintage illustrations of children in the winter.

Coming up: I'll be repeating some favorite themes, and I will appreciate any suggestions.  After 152 weeks, there is going to be some repetition!

Theme next week: pets.
Theme the week after that: geology or landscapes.

Sunday Stamps # 132

Hey, guess what? It's time for Sunday Stamps.

Our theme this week is anything you wish.

My contribution: a fun stamp from Finland, a country with interesting stamps.

Some polar bears enjoying themselves!
Please join me with any stamp you wish to share, from Finland or anywhere!

I base my themes on what I have on hand, usually recent stamps from Postcrossers, so my themes jump all over the place.  This week I have received some great stamps and can plan ahead.  So just for this week I can give a two week's heads up.

Theme next week: really colorful stamps.
Two weeks from now: mini-sheets ( or a whole sheet of stamps if you wish).

Sunday Stamps #123

It's Saturday evening, a storm is clearing away, and it's time for Sunday Stamps.

I have a cold, or something, and so I am not feeling my best.  A short post tonight then.  Our theme:

Stamps from Finland, another country well-known for interesting stamps.

Here is a great one:

You can just make out the Cumulonimbus capillatus title.  On the real card you have to turn the stamp to the light just right to see this, and to see some weather map symbols.  Great colors!

What stamps from Finland do you have to share this week?

Theme next week: It's Memorial Day in the USA.  Let's share stamps commemorating or memorializing someone or an important event.

Also:  Suggestions for future themes welcome!

Sunday Stamps # 111

Hello and welcome, on this sunny yet wintry day (Here in the USA) to Sunday Stamps # 111, opening as usual on Saturday evening, to allow more time for everyone to post.  After all, it's Sunday already in Australia and in Asia!

Our theme this week: Space. Human exploration, planets, moons, or the aurora borealis and other phenomena.

I picked this theme because of the amazing sky show in Russia of a fireball and sonic boom, on the same day that an asteroid was going to fly by Earth, but not hit us.  Thank goodness no one (I believe) was killed, though some were injured by flying glass.

Anyway, on to stamps.

I have been lucky enough to see the aurora twice.  I do not live very far North, but during two episodes when the Sun was very active, I was able to catch the aurora at my latitude.  Wonderful, though not with the colors you see here.

What colors of Space have you to share??

Theme next week:  Open, anything you wish.

Sunday Stamps #96

Hello and happy weekend Sunday Stampers!

I did not mean to scare anyone last week - just rushing off to my conference.  I live in a part of the Midwest only slightly affected by Sandy.  It's amazing to me how a category 1 hurricane could cause so much damage.  Granted it was very large and wind and rain extended out very far.

Here are the stamps I would have shown last week:

for the theme of water.

Our theme this week is anything you wish.  I have a sweet flower stamp from Finland to share.

Join me this week with any stamp you like, that you would like to share.  If you have suggestions for future themes (even an old theme to revisit), please leave theme in the comments.  Thanks!

Theme next week: Geology and the Earth.

Sunday Stamps #60

The theme this Sunday is Streetcars or any kind of public transportation.  Feel free to interpret this theme widely.  Here is my stamp:

An older stamp from our friends in Finland, showing a green streetcar and lovely birch trees.  I do not think the USA has put streetcars on stamps, but maybe someone can prove me wrong.

Enjoy this week's theme!

March is Women's History month in the USA, and March 8 is International Women's Day.  Next Sunday Stamps, let's have a theme of stamps featuring famous women, women's rights, International Women's Day, etc.

Happy PFF

Happy Postcard Friendship Friday!  This is a shaped postcard from a Postcrosser in Finland, of one of the most adorable puppies I have ever seen!  I want to take him home, even though he looks like he'll grow into a very large dog!

I am joining up with beth at the Best Hearts are Crunchy.

Sunday Stamps # 32

This week's theme: stamps of unusual shape, size, or orientation.  These are favorites of many people!!

These stamps arrived on a recent Postcrossing postcard from Finland.  You might have guessed Finland because of the wonderful stamp in the shape of that country!

And if you are going to use make-up postage stamps, why can't they be in an unusual shape too?

Sunday Stamps #28

Today's theme is anything you wish. So often people put up stamps that are so interesting, when the theme is open. So blog away!

Today I am sharing a Moomin stamp from Finland.  It came to me on a recent Postcrossing card.   I am not entirely sure of the appeal of these creatures, but they apparently have a wide international following.

Theme next week: Stamps with a story - of how they came to you, or your purchase of them, or of the correspondence that they sent to you.  You'll see an example when I post next week.

Link in your blog entry below following the instructions, and visit some other blogs.

Postcrossing Tuesday

This is a postcard I received through Postcrossing from Tuovi in Finland. The oversized postcard is from the Waino Aaltosen Museo (there should be double dots over some of those vowels!) in Turku. This is the Court Uniform of the Empress, blue silk satin embroidered with gold, Collection of Shenyang Palace Museum. No year or dynasty is given.

Gosh, what a beauty! One of my favorites.
