Sunday Stamps: the letter "F"

 Good day, welcome to my blog.  It's a cool Fall-like day and cloudy, in the American Midwest.  Well it is September.

We are up to the Letter F in the tour of the alphabet by Sunday Stamps.  I have two stamps today.  Firstly, a stamp from Finland:

Sunday Stamps: Cities/Urban

 Good day, and welcome to my postcard and stamp blog.  It is a cool May day in the American Midwest, and it's time for Sunday stamps.

The theme this week is Cities or urban scenes.  I have a stamp of Paris:

That was a joint issue with China.  This stamp was issued some time ago.  I also have an urban scene:

A streetcar and some nice birch trees from Finland.  When I was in Postcrossing I received many postcards from Finland.

Sunday Stamps: Glass

 Good Day, and welcome to my blog.  It is a sunny day and about 40 degrees F here in the American Midwest.  It is time for Sunday Stamps.

I start with a stamp I have shared before - but it's so beautiful!

This is the stamp that started it all for me, back in the 1980's.

I had noticed stamps before of course.  I was in graduate school and my current boyfriend at the time collected stamps, which I thought rather amusing.  Then C. visited my university as a postdoc and started receiving packages from home, in France.  This stamp was on one of the early packages.  It took my breath away.  Such detail, of a beautiful stained glass window, in such a small frame!

Putting stamps in an album lasted as long as the boyfriend (not long) but I still love stamps.

And another glass stamp:

A penny stamp of a Tiffany lamp, to make up postage.

Sunday Stamps: Mustaches

 It is a cool and sunny morning in the American Midwest, and time for Sunday Stamps.

The them today is Mustaches.  I have a stamp and surrounding material I last shared in 2014:

Sent to me by a Postcrosser form France.  Benjamin Rabier is associated with the Laughing Cow, and here is part of his Wikipedia entry:

Benjamin Rabier (1864–1939) was a French illustrator, comic book artist and animator. He became famous for creating the logo for Laughing Cow Cheese (La vache qui rit), and is one of the precursors of animal comics. His work has inspired many other artists, notably Hergé and Edmond-François Calvo.

A native of La Roche-sur-Yon, Vendée, Rabier started to work as an illustrator for various newspapers after meeting political cartoonist Caran d'Ache. His first album for children was the story of Tintin-Lutin, published in 1898, which told of a young lutin or "imp"; here his main characters are human and not animals, as they came to be in later albums. His most famous creations are Gideon the duck and the characters he drew for Le roman de Renart.

Sunday Stamps: Aerial views

A joint issue with China, a view of Paris.  I received this stamp via a Postcrossing postcard in 2014.

Sunday Stamps: Glass

 Good day, and welcome to my blog.  It's a cool and sunny day in the American Midwest, and time for Sunday Stamps.

The theme is glass, and I am re-sharing the stamp that started it all.

This is a French stamp of a stained glass window.  This arrived on a parcel for my friend and roommate C. way back in graduate school.  It opened my eyes to the beauty that could be on a small slip of gummed paper.  It is also the stamp I started Sunday Stamps with, many years ago.

Sunday Stamps: Moustaches

 Good day, and welcome to Sunday Stamps.  We have just gone through the Daylight Savings Time "fall back" so I am a bit unsettled.  It is a cool sunny morning with frost on the ground, and time for Sunday Stamps.

The theme is Moustaches.

An older stamp, from my Postcrossing days.  This is Benjamin Rabier, perhaps best known today for his illustration of the Laughing Cow, for a certain brand of cheese.  He illustrated a number of other animal tales too.

Sunday Stamps # 200

Welcome this week to my last posting of Sunday Stamps.

   

 Sunday Stamps officially started on January 8, 2011. I posted a stamp from France, a 5 franc stamp showing a stained glass window:

This is the stamp that really made me look carefully at these little works of art on paper.  It arrived at my apartment on a package for my roommate C. - a package from her family in France.

I had six participants that week in January.  You may know three of them: postcardy, Postal Picture, and Sheila at A Postcard a Day.

Our theme this week is art on stamps, and I am leaving as I started, with the stamp above.

Sunday Stamps # 182

It's time for Sunday Stamps!  How the weeks go by sometimes!

Our theme this week is Faraway (romantic? exotic?) places.

First, a city known for being very romantic.

I have visited Paris twice, but at both times without a significant other so I can't comment on that.  But it is a beautiful and historic city.

Next, for the exotic:

Remember, I am in the Middle West of the USA, in a staunchly Republican county, that probably has citizens suspicious of all foreigners.  And I have never traveled to Africa.  So when a Postcrossing postcard from Morocco, a new country for me, arrived in the mailbox, I was thrilled.  How exotic!  So you Moroccan residents reading can smirk along with the Parisians fighting traffic about this blog entry.  It's OK.

So... faraway? romantic? exotic?  Share a stamp from such a place.

Sunday Stamps # 180

Well what a change in the world since last Saturday.  Conflict in the Middle East has gotten much worse, and Malaysian Airlines flight 17 has gone down in a tragic way.  I don't know people involved in either situation but I think about the many who are affected by these events.

It is Saturday night so I turn from these matters to get my Sunday Stamps post up for all of you.  Our theme is Artists and illustrators.  The following stamp will be a favorite of the fans of the Laughing Cow:

This French stamp honors Benjamin Rabier (as you can read above).  According to Wikipedia (not always reliable, but we will go with it here):

Sunday Stamps #1

Announcing a new meme: Sunday Stamps!

This meme is just to share interesting stamps: they don't have to be collectible or rare.  They can be commemoratives from your country; stamps from Postcrossing, even stamps purchased from a specialty store or ebay.

I am starting with the stamp that started it all for me, back in the 1980's.

I had noticed stamps before of course.  I was in graduate school and my current boyfriend at the time collected stamps, which I thought rather amusing.  Then C. visited my university as a postdoc and started receiving packages from home, in France.  This stamp was on one of the early packages.  It took my breath away.  Such detail, of a beautiful stained glass window, in such a small frame!

Well, then I began to accumulate in earnest.  The keeping of stamps in an album lasted only as long the boyfriend did (not long) but I still  save stamps, and when I have a few, soak them off the envelopes.  Now that I am in Postcrossing I get many more stamps from around the world.  I don't destroy the the postcards however to get the stamps off!  This is when a flat bed scanner is so very useful.  If you follow  this blog or Postcard Friendship Friday, then you have seen some of my collection.
