Sunday Stamps: eastern hemisphere

 Good day and welcome.  I am on vacation with family but making time for Sunday Stamps.

The theme is stamps from countries in the Eastern hemisphere.  In looking back at former blog entries, I found some stamps from a Postcrossing postcard from the People's Republic of China, perfect for today:

2 Chinese stamps issued for the London Olympics.  I can tell from the "tectonics plates" logo on the left hand stamp, and the strange one eyed creature on the right hand stamp.  And it's postmarked 2014.

Sunday Stamps: Sport

 Good Day and welcome to my blog.

This week's prompt for Sunday stamps is Sport.  I have no new stamps for this, but in searching my blog I found some older stamps shared once before:

These stamps were issued by China for the London Olympics.  I can tell because of the odd puzzle pieces or tectonic plates on the left stamp, and the strange one eyed creature on the right stamp.  Postmark indicates this is from my Postcrossing days, back in 2014.

Hello again and welcome to Sunday Stamps!

It is a cold cloudy and yet sunny day here in the American Midwest.  The days are getting noticeably shorter.  And here in the USA we will set our clocks back one hour tonight.

Here I share two lovely stamps from the People's Republic of China, of a tiger and of a panda.  A happy surprise on the back of a Postcrossing postcard last month.

Sunday Stamps # 188

Welcome friends to Sunday Stamps, a small place on the internet where we share our love for these little pieces of paper, so everyday and yet so interesting.  At least to some people.

The theme this week is mammals.  This is the stamp I had in mind for this week.

I could have set the theme to be elephants, or big mammals :-) but I would like it to be broad enough that you could find a stamp.  This one is from China - the gold letters did not scan so well.

Sunday Stamps # 181

I am going to be away on a short family vacation this Saturday and Sunday, so I am preparing this week's Sunday Stamps on Friday, setting it up to open on Saturday.

Our theme this week is Open - Anything you wish.  Maybe this could include interesting stamps that are hard to fit into any theme.  That is not the case for me because I think we have had the theme of castles before.

There are always castles to be seen and to appear on stamps in Europe and other countries.  In the USA?  Not many unless you count the large castle-like homes built by very rich families in the late 1800's and early 1900's, such as George Vanderbilt's Biltmore.  And these are not likely to appear on stamps. Germany, it appears, has a never-ending supply of schlosses (and I don't mean that unkindly!)

Hello hello and welcome to Sunday Stamps!

It's the evening of a beautiful day.  The World Cup games are being played.  And Americans are actually changing their gaze from baseball to soccer! (As we call it here).  And our theme is Sport.  It is a theme we have had before but I hope you have some stamps to share.  First some stamps from China:

Sunday Stamps # 177

I am having intermittent outages of internet connection tonight, so I think this will be a shorter entry than usual.

Our theme this week is archaeology/anthropology, as always interpreted broadly.  Perhaps a stamp of a historic site?  Or of historic art?

As in this stamp of very old, very historic art.  I find rock art from this time period fascinating, and I wonder what other artifacts may have existed but have since decayed away.

Sunday Stamps # 174

I am putting this post together early as I will be on a short but busy business trip this weekend.

If it's Saturday evening, it must be time for Sunday Stamps.

Our theme this week is airplanes and air transport.  My stamp to share is from China.

I like how the airplane is small, and this is a typical airport scene (granted in a tropical area with palm trees and florid vegetation.)  This came to me of course from a postcard via Postcrossing.

And speaking of Postcrossing, did you see that Willa of Postcard Perfect was featured?  And she mentioned our contributor Sheila of A Postcard a Day?  I feel as if know famous people!

Sunday Stamps # 158

Well, it's been a busy week at chez Viridian and I may be heading to bed early. But not before I set up Sunday Stamps # 158.

It's another cold week here in the American Midwest, but not as cold or as snowy as some other areas!  I hear some serious storms have made their way through Great Britain.

Let's think about a happy occasion, Chinese New Year, which started on Jan. 31.  It gives us a chance to share stamps from China or Taiwan.

This is a stamp showing some beautiful architecture, though I do not know the location.  It captures the feeling of many artworks from this great country.  Please feel free to join me with any stamp from these two countries.

Sunday Stamps #121

It's time for Sunday Stamps.  Theme this week: Stamps from China, or Taiwan.

Lately, when I have been sending out Postcrossing postcards, I am opting to put 2 first class stamps on the postcard plus a 20 cent stamp to meet the international postal rate.  Some people don't notice but some postcrossers appreciate the interesting stamps.  Some postcrossers in China must be doing the same thing, because I have received some interesting combinations of stamps.

Postcrossing

Sunday Stamps #110

It's February and that means it's time for the Lunar New Year, or Chinese New Year. In fact I should have had this theme last week, as for 2013 the New Year was celebrated on February 10. However, my Chinese students tell me that the celebration is a month long, so I should be OK.

Above: Stamps of a bridge and of the Brown Eared Pheasant, recently received on a postcard from China. According to Wikipedia: "Due to isolated population, deforestation and still hunted although legally protected by China, the Brown Eared Pheasant is evaluated as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. "

The Lunar New Year stamp for the USA has firecrackers on it.  I wonder if China or other countries issue a stamp for the New Year?  I hope someone can enlighten me. (Remember I am not a stamp collector - just a stamp accumulator!)

Wasn't it amazing, yet scary that on the same day an asteroid narrowly missed Earth, and a meteor exploded above central Russia?  Luckily no one was killed in Russia, though there were a number of people injured, mostly by flying glass.  And I heard on one news report that if the asteroid came by 15 minutes earlier (or later, I can't remember) we wouldn't be so lucky.  This event leads me to the announcement of next week's theme:
