In which stamps move into the internet age.



I received it on a postcard from Germany. (Love the snowdrop.) If you go to this website and can read the German you too can order specialized postage for your postcards or letters.

In the USA you can do this too - if you are willing to pay more than the marked rate on the stamp. The US Postal Service offers zazzle stamps, at US $19.99 to $20.95 for 20 stamps. Here are two of my favorites.

You can also make your own specialized postage, using your own images, at zazzle.com.  It looks pretty straightforward, and I might do it someday.   I hope Dorin will add some more information, as he has produced these special stamps and shown them on his blog.

A question: will some of these become very collectible?  They are limited editions.  Will stamp collectors snap them up?

Postcard Friendship Friday - postcard sent to Suicide Corner

A linen card titled D.C. 152 - Flamingo Hotel, Miami Beach, Fla.

Appropriately pink, this hotel has a boat dock but not a beach in front of it.  Given the snow and ice here in the midwest, I'd happily stay in the Flamingo and walk to the beach.
Postmarked Jan.16 1948, and addressed to Mr and Mrs Julian Robin and family, Suicide Corner, Sanford Rd. No. Westport, Mass.  Yes, really.

Message:
"Hollywood, Fla.  Staying in this town.  Quite a place.  Gets hot in the daytime but you freeze at night.  No Oldsmobiles down here only Chevrolets, Clint."

An intriguing message to be sure!

Sunday Stamps #7

It's President's Day in the United States on Monday.  Washington's birthday and Lincoln's birthday have been glommed together (assimilated?) into what's seen now as a day off and a chance to shop some sales.
Let's look at some stamps.

On the left: a penny stamp from 1908, featuring Ben Franklin.  On the right: a penny stamp from 1949, featuring George Washington.  I don't think I need to explain who these two men were, and how important they were to the early United States.
There must be millions of these two stamps out there, many still affixed to vintage postcards.  Thank you, humble green stamps, that helped send these postcards on their way.

This is a postcard of a Lake Superior agate that someone has polished to show the beauty inside.  There are beaches on Lake Superior where one used to be able to look at the pebbles and find some that, not looking like this, at least had the potential to polish up like this.  I suspect those beaches have been pretty picked over by now.

Sunday Stamps #6

Wow, week #6  I guess it's not a new meme anymore, but on its way to becoming an established meme.

Last week's theme was Rockets and Space. 
This week's theme is "Any stamp you wish", with perhaps a nod to Valentine's Day and love and flowers.  Here are some delicate flower stamps from Belarus, that sure get me thinking about Spring.  They arrived on a Postcrossing card.  The fish?  I am not sure about them, I doubt tropical fish can be found in Belarus, except in an aquarium.

What would you like to receive as a gift from your Valentine?  I have been on a diet for some time (and have lost 25 pounds) so I am hoping for some fine jewelry :-)

Titled After the storm. Postmarked July 30, 1907, in Portsmouth, Ohio.  Sent to Mr. Harry Steahly, but there is no message.  What's up with that?

It looks much like this in the Midwest today - it's a gloomy evening.  I appreciate Beth's Valentine card, but I can't find one in my collection.

Sunday Stamps #5

Last week was a celebration of the Chinese New Year, the Year of the Rabbit.
This Sunday: Rockets and Space!

This is a set of stamps from perhaps the early 1980's (?), back when first class postage was 18 cents. (Click on the image to see a larger version.)  I thought the discoveries of the times were just amazing and I wanted to become an astronomer.  2 years of college as an astronomy major showed me that it really was a lot of calculus and physics, applied to outer space objects.  Off to geology I went.
Here you see the Space Shuttle, though I don't think they would have wheels down in outer space.

Postcard Friendship Friday: The Ice Mountain

The Ice Mountain, Niagara Falls. Divided back.
As we received an inch of ice over two storms, this seems appropriate!  No school for the children for 4 days!

This photo is of people on the ice below Niagara Falls.  I don't care how thick the ice is, don't they realize there is a rushing river underneath and the ice could crack at any second?  Somehow I think this is not allowed anymore.
