Sunday Stamps: Christmas

Good day, and welcome to my blog.

It's a cold crisp day in the American Midwest, and it's the Christmas season.  So it must be time to share Christmas stamps.

The UP Postal Service always issues a religious (usually a Madonna and Child image) stamp and a secular stamp or stamp set.  I am sharing both today.  Scans are from the USPS.

And the secular stamp set.  FinnBadger has already shared the poinsettia stamp.  Here is the whole set.

A great way to spread holiday cheer.

Happy Holidays everyone!

Sunday Stamps: The Color Red

Good day, and welcome to my blog.  It is raining, not snowing, this gloomy morning in this part of the American Midwest.

It's time for Sunday Stamps, and the theme this week is the color red.  My first stamp was issued for Valentine's day in 2024:

Older but still a neat stamp.  My second stamp today was issued for global postage, and is appropriate for the season:

This is a Forever stamp, always good for the current postage rate, which keeps going up.  International postage is now  US $1.65 which is why I don't do Postcrossing anymore.

Sunday Stamps: Glass

Good Day, and welcome to my blog.  It is a sunny day and about 40 degrees F here in the American Midwest.  It is time for Sunday Stamps.

I start with a stamp I have shared before - but it's so beautiful!

This is the stamp that started it all for me, back in the 1980's.

I had noticed stamps before of course.  I was in graduate school and my current boyfriend at the time collected stamps, which I thought rather amusing.  Then C. visited my university as a postdoc and started receiving packages from home, in France.  This stamp was on one of the early packages.  It took my breath away.  Such detail, of a beautiful stained glass window, in such a small frame!

Putting stamps in an album lasted as long as the boyfriend (not long) but I still love stamps.

And another glass stamp:

A penny stamp of a Tiffany lamp, to make up postage.

Sunday Stamps: other languages

Good day, and welcome to my blog.  It is a cold sunny day in the American Midwest, and time for Sunday Stamps.

Our theme today is foreign languages.  I am sharing stamps from Russia, with Cyrillic letters, and the Russian language, which I cannot read.

(I have shared these stamps before).  A beautiful lace stamp, but what do the words say?

Also note:  the stamps are Russian, but the image in the right corner is of the Soviet Union!  CCCP!  This Postcrosser used an older postcard.

Sunday Stamps: Small animals

Good day, and welcome to my blog.

It's a gray day in the American Midwest, and time for Sunday Stamps.  I have a USA stamp that is not a Forever stamp:

It is worth 40 cents and is meant to make up postage on oversized packages.
A lovely red fox with piercing eyes.

Good day, and welcome to my blog.  It's a cool cloudy day in the American Midwest, and time for Sunday Stamps.

The theme today is head shots - people featured on stamps.

Meet Constance Baker Motley.

Constance Baker Motley (September 14, 1921 – September 28, 2005) was the first African American woman known to have argued a case before the US Supreme Court and the first to serve as a federal judge (in the Southern district of New York).

Sunday Stamps: Military

It's Sunday, and time for Sunday Stamps.

Veteran's day (Remembrance Day in Canada) is tomorrow. So on this rainy day in the American Midwest I am sharing the stamp I last shared in 2020.  Not of a soldier but of a battleship.

The battleship Missouri, commissioned June 11, 1944.  Affectionately named "Mighty Mo", as she was heavily armed and could attain high speeds for a vessel of her size.

She is known for the role she played in the end of the Pacific part of WWII.  On Sept. 2, 1945, military officers from each of the Allied powers and Imperial Japan met on the deck of the Missouri and signed documents confirming Japan's surrender and the end of the war.

Sunday Stamps: Mustaches

It is a cool and sunny morning in the American Midwest, and time for Sunday Stamps.

The them today is Mustaches.  I have a stamp and surrounding material I last shared in 2014:

Sent to me by a Postcrosser form France.  Benjamin Rabier is associated with the Laughing Cow, and here is part of his Wikipedia entry:

Benjamin Rabier (1864–1939) was a French illustrator, comic book artist and animator. He became famous for creating the logo for Laughing Cow Cheese (La vache qui rit), and is one of the precursors of animal comics. His work has inspired many other artists, notably Hergé and Edmond-François Calvo.

A native of La Roche-sur-YonVendée, Rabier started to work as an illustrator for various newspapers after meeting political cartoonist Caran d'Ache. His first album for children was the story of Tintin-Lutin, published in 1898, which told of a young lutin or "imp"; here his main characters are human and not animals, as they came to be in later albums. His most famous creations are Gideon the duck and the characters he drew for Le roman de Renart.

Sunday Stamps: Public buildings

 ... A palace in fact.

Hello and welcome to my blog.  It is a cool and sunny day in the American Midwest.  It's time for Sunday Stamps, and the theme is public buildings.

The US Postal Service has no current stamps that fit the theme, so I looked at my old blog entries, and found these stamps from Russia, issued in 2013:

These stamps came from a Postcrosser in St. Petersburg, on a postcard sent to me in 2014.  The bottom stamp, I am pretty sure, is of the Winter Palace.

Sunday Stamps: Birds

Good day, and welcome to my blog.  It's a great sunny day in the American Midwest.  It's warmer than usual for this time of year, warm in the sun and cool in the shade.

It's time for Sunday Stamps, and the theme is birds.

Having none in hand, I searched out stamp resellers on the internet and found this pretty one:

A Forever stamp with a chickadee, a favorite of many.  It is named after its call, a quick high "chick a dee dee dee."   These birds stay in the north over winter and will happily come to your bird feeder.

Sunday Stamps: Jewelry

Good day, and welcome to my blog.  It is a cool sunny morning in the American Midwest, and it's time for Sunday Stamps.

Our theme today is Jewelry, and there is a stamp available on the USPS website:

Released in 2011, it is to make up postage, before the USPS switched to Forever stamps.  This is an image of a Navajo silver and turquoise necklace, and they are stunning in person.  I don't have one, I have only seen them in stores and galleries!

Sunday Stamps: The Sky

Good Day, and welcome to my blog.  It's a cool cloudy day with some rain, in the American Midwest.  I hope no one was affected by hurricane Helene.  We got some high winds and heavy rain, some tree branches down.  But nothing like the Southeast USA.

It's time for Sunday Stamps, and the theme today is the sky.  Skies are not often featured on stamps.  You must look for a beautiful sky as part of a landscape, for example:

As in this painting of the Columbia River Gorge.  This 2016 stamp is a very high value stamp, US $22.95, so for big packages.  (I have shared this stamp before.)  I don't think the USPS issues such high value stamps anymore.  But look at that sky!

Sunday Stamps: Food

Good day, and welcome to my blog.  It is a beautiful September day in the American Midwest, not a cloud in the sky.

It's time for Sunday Stamps, and the theme this week is food.  I have a stamp of grapes, not exactly grapes for eating.

According to the US Postal service, these are Pinot grapes, more likely to be made into wine.

This is a stamp to make up postage - therefore the 5 cents printed on it.  You would never see it alone on an envelope, as in the second image.  Even postcard postage is much more than that!

Sunday Stamps: Color

Good Day, and welcome to my blog.  It is a lovely morning, sunny and clear, in the American Midwest, and it's time for Sunday Stamps.

The theme is color, and our hostess has shown a range of Machin stamps from the UK, all of different denominations, and different background colors.  The USA generally does not issue stamps with the same image in different colors.  There are a few examples however.

These stamps were issued circa 2019 - 2020 I think, in time for Valentine's Day.  I have shared them before.

Sunday Stamps: Sport

Good Day, and welcome to my blog.  It's a warm humid day in the American Midwest.

I have a stamp currently on sale on the USPS website:

Celebrating women's soccer, as it is known in the USA, or Football in the rest of the world.
In 1972 in the USA Title IX passed, banning discrimination on the basis of sex in education, and women's sports in schools improved.
In 1996, women's soccer (football) became a summer Olympic sport for the first time.  The USA beat China for a gold medal at those games.

Sunday Stamps: Western Hemisphere

Good day and welcome to my blog.

I was at a professional conference last week, and could not blog.  But I am back again, on a warm day in the American Midwest.

The theme this week is stamps from the Western Hemisphere.  North and South - that is set by the equator.  East and West - that is set by the prime meridian of longitude, and that was set by Great Britain back in the day.

Anyhow.  I have a stamp from a postcard sent by traveling friends, and it continues the Caribbean theme:

Sunday Stamps: Fatherly Figures

Good Day, and welcome to my blog.  It is a cool morning in the American Midwest, but will soon go up to 90 degrees F as the heat dome overtakes us.

It's time for Sunday Stamps, and I am sharing a stamp issued last year by the US Postal Service.  It is of Chief Standing Bear.

Chief Standing Bear, a Ponca chief
In 1879, Chief Standing Bear won a landmark court ruling that determined a Native American was a person under the law with an inherent right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.
Their homeland in NE Nebraska was given away and about 700 Ponca people had been relocated to Indian Territory (OK).  Standing Bear sued the government for his freedom after being arrested, along with 29 others, for attempting to return to his homeland.
After winning his case, he and others from his tribe were allowed to return to their old reservation.
In 1924, one issue that his 1879 case had raised was finally resolved when Congress adopted the Indian Citizenship Act, which conferred citizenship on all Native Americans born in the United States.

Sunday Stamps: Dragons

Good day, and welcome to my blog.  It is a cool and cloudy day in the American Midwest, and time for Sunday Stamps.

The theme today is dragons or saints (thinking of St. George).

I have a stamp from 2012 that I have shared before, but it's really beautiful:

From the US Postal Service:

"Dragons aren't always scary monsters. Consider the colorful creature depicted by the U.S. Postal Service® in its 2012 Year of the Dragon (Forever®) stamp, fifth in the Celebrating Lunar New Year series! The Year of the Dragon begins on January 23, 2012, and ends on February 9, 2013.

Combining original artwork by Kam Mak with two elements from the previous series of Lunar New Year stamps — Clarence Lee's intricate paper-cut design of a dragon and the Chinese character for "Dragon," drawn in grass-style calligraphy by Lau Bun — art director Ethel Kessler has created a culturally rich stamp design that celebrates the diversity of the American experience."

This is one of a set of Spring stamps released just yesterday.  Each stamp shows a hummingbird and flowers.  This is the greenest one of the lot, and the image here is from the US Postal Service.

Sunday Stamps: Flowers

Good Day and welcome to my blog.  It is a sunny day, and warm (53 F) for this time of year.  It's time for Sunday Stamps.

The theme this week is flowers.

I have a stamp from the US Postal Service.  It will be available on March 22 this year.

This stamp is made for heavier or thicker items, such as wedding invitations, therefore the 2 ounce rate printed on it.  It is a forever stamp, always worth the 2 ounce rate.

Sunday Stamps: Illustrations

Hello and welcome to my blog.  It's a cool sunny day in the American Midwest, and time for Sunday Stamps.

The theme this week is illustrations.  I have a stamp issued last year, still available on the USPS website:

A stamp honoring children's book author Tomie dePaola (1934 - 2020). He has a varied body of work: folktales, legends, informational books, religious and holiday stories, and autobiographical tales.  The stamp art features a detail from the cover of Strega Nona, or "grandma witch"  who uses magic to help with matters of the heart and to cure her neighbors' ills.

Sunday Stamps: Blue

Good day, and welcome to a cold but sunny day in the American Midwest.  The snow that fell yesterday and the day before is not melting.

It's time for Sunday Stamps, and the theme is blue.

I have a clever interpretation for you today:

Bluegrass music!  This stamp will be available on March 14, 2024.  The instruments pictured are the core of a bluegrass band.  The "high and lonesome" sound is from the Appalachian region of the USA.

Sunday Stamps: Calligraphy

Good day, and welcome to my blog.

It is a normal temperature today in the American Midwest, after two day of warmth (55 - 65 Degrees F).

It's time for Sunday Stamps.  The theme this week is calligraphy.  I don't have any stamps that feature a typeface that looks like handwriting, but I do have a stamp that may fit the theme:

A USA stamp available now, honoring women cryptologists.

From the USPS webpage: The stamp image:  the background is a WAVES recruitment poster, with an overlay of characters from the "Purple" code.  The Purple code was used by the Japanese government to encrypt diplomatic messages.  The key to this code was was discovered in Sept. 1940 by Genevieve Grotjan.  The USA could read and exploit the information in Japanese diplomatic messages for the rest of the war.

The women could never talk of their work, and did not do so, even after the war.

Sunday Stamps: Trees

Good day, and welcome to my blog.  It is a cool and cloudy wintery afternoon in the American Midwest.  It is time for Sunday Stamps. and the theme this week is trees.

I have some stamps I shared back in 2011:

These older stamps from Poland came from a lot I purchased on ebay.  The trees shown are pear (on the left) and cherry (on the right).  Thank you to Google translate to help me translate the Polish!  I certainly didn't recognize the Latin species names.

Our hostess has a wonderful se-tenant set of apricot trees over the 4 seasons.

Sunday Stamps: Writers

Good day, and welcome to my blog.  It is a cold cloudy day in the American Midwest.

It's time for Sunday Stamps, and the theme is writers or poets.  I have a stamp that will be released on Feb. 6, 2024, of the Canadian-American writer Saul Bellow:

Scenes of Chicago are in the background, a city he is closely associated with.  He won a number of literary prizes, including the Nobel Prize for Literature.  More on Saul Bellow is at the Wikipedia page for him.
