Sepia Saturday 100

I am joining this meme for the first time this week, after seeing it again and again on the blogs of people I follow.  Congrats on reaching week 100!

I am sharing today the original scan of the photo I use for my avatar.

I have wondered over 100 times who this young woman is.  The photography studio was in Mt. Vernon Ohio, near Kenyon College.  Perhaps a college student?  There is no note on the back.  I found this image in an antique store in SW Ohio, many miles away.

My supply of sepia and black and white photos are limited, but I'll try to join as I can - and as I can remember!

Good to see you here and what a lovely picture you chose for your first outing. I recognised it straight away.

I always wondered who that was--I didn't think it was you.

It is a lovely photograph. Considering her head covering and shawl do you think she might have been a theater student? It is sad to me to find beautiful photographs separated from descendants of those in the photographs. Thanks for sharing. Welcome to Sepia Saturday.

It is quite a theatrical shot featuring the headwear as opposed to the face. I would imagine several shots were taken on the same day and out there in the photo ghost yard is a photo of her looking demurely at the photographer.

It's such a beautiful photo and a great choice as an avatar. How amused she would be to know that we are all looking at her likeness so many years later.

I agree that it is a beautiful avatar selection. I like to think she was a hat maker or fashion designer -- whatever, she was a very pretty lady.

I agree, it's a beautiful photograph. She reminds me of the girl in the pearl earring.

Welcome to Sepia Saturday. Cross-fertilisation from one blog to another is something I can recommend.
Thanks for showing and explaining the source of your avatar - I always thought it must have been a family member.

First of all, welcome to Sepia Saturday, thank you so much for joining us. And what a photograph to open with - a true delight to study. Search out all those old images (they don't have to be sepia) and join us again and again.

A beautiful cabinet portrait to mark both your first, and very welcome, contribution to Sepia Saturday, and the centennial, thank you.

From the style of the vignetted portrait and the embossed card mount, I believe this portrait was probably taken in the late 1880s or early to mid-1890s. It's pretty unusual, though, and I have to say I think I disagree with the previous interpretations. I believe it's possibly an immigrant wearing some kind of national costume, or at least a traditional head covering, possibly from Eastern Europe, although I wouldn't completely rule out a western European origin either. She seems pretty fair skinned, so I doubt she is from the southern or eastern shores of the Mediterranean.

If this one's anything to go by, look forward to your future contributions.

A wonderful photo. Photo styling is part of my job and I can just imagine the time it took to arrange the drapes on her head covering. Someone did a beautiful job.
Welcome to SS.

Beautiful photo, the angle draws one in, and the lovely draping of her shawl.

I'm so sorry that I missed this last week. I've always wondered who it was in your avatar but it seems I'm none the wiser now. :)
