Last week was a celebration of the Chinese New Year, the Year of the Rabbit.
This Sunday: Rockets and Space!
This is a set of stamps from perhaps the early 1980's (?), back when first class postage was 18 cents. (Click on the image to see a larger version.) I thought the discoveries of the times were just amazing and I wanted to become an astronomer. 2 years of college as an astronomy major showed me that it really was a lot of calculus and physics, applied to outer space objects. Off to geology I went.
Here you see the Space Shuttle, though I don't think they would have wheels down in outer space.
Here is another space stamp I can't resist sharing from a country that does not exist anymore:
Theme next week: anything you wish.
Viridian
I have the Stamps & Stories book from USPS ©1981. That is the Space Achievement Issue of 1981.
ReplyDeleteMy book is still quite handy for older U. S. stamps. The books have increased greatly in size and price since then.
As a boy I learned a lot about the world from stamps. These USA space stamps are an education in themselves.
ReplyDeleteGreat stamps for an interesting subject.
ReplyDeleteWow, a great set of stamps. The Russian one is so apt, a documentary about the their first flights showed it was almost a tin box on top of inflammable fluid.
ReplyDeleteThanks everyone for your comments and great stamps! I said the theme is open next week, but one can always dig up valentine's day stamps, as it will be Feb. 13.
ReplyDeleteI love the one from the USSR because to me it looks just as if they were sitting on a fairground ride. :) the sheet from the USA is wonderful.
ReplyDeleteI wanted to be an astronomer at one stage too, until I discovered about the maths.
So you were caught between a rock and a cosmic place...
ReplyDeleteCool stamps! :)
Great blog. Sunday Stamps is a new one for me - I'm too late tonight but hopefully I'll prepare something for next week.
ReplyDeleteGreat stamps, really like the first set. Interesting post too.
